We accept toilet-trained children between the age of 3 and 6 (as of October 31st) in our three French-immersion classes. Please explore our website, give us a call, or send us an email for more information!
Founded in 1987, the school began as the Eugene French American School. It was originally housed in Fox Hollow Elementary School, and then moved down the hill to the previous Pearl Buck Center on West Amazon in 1989. That year, the school added a Spanish classroom and became Eugene International Preschool and Kindergarten (EIPK). In 1993, the Spanish program was dropped in order to expand and focus on the French program, and in 1994, the school’s name was changed to The Little French School, Inc. We have been providing quality immersion education under that name ever since, and we have been housed at our current location, in Lane ESD’s Westmoreland Campus, since 2006. We hope you’ll join us and become a part of our story!
The Little French School operates Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:30pm. We offer Petite Section, Moyenne Section, and Grande Section for toilet-trained children between the ages of 3 and 6. Younger children entering our Petite Section must be 3 or turn 3 in October 31 of the school year. We also offer Extended Care that is open to our students as well as elementary students seeking a French-supported after-school program. A variety of scheduling options are available for all ages (please see schedule/tuition breakdown on the enrollment page). We provide a 10-month pre-academic program (early September through mid-June, we try to follow 4j calendar as much as we can), as well as an extracurricular summer program in July and August. Please visit our summer page: https://www.littlefrenchschool.org/summer-camps for more information about our summer program.
Our immersion program seeks to sharpen each child’s intellectual abilities by using a second language as a medium of instruction, helping the children to develop their full potential. Each child’s individuality and creativity is honored and encouraged, which helps our young learners develop self-esteem.
We maintain an environment in which positive reinforcement is provided and children are able to make choices. Respect for one another is at the core of our philosophy, and conflicts are resolved with redirection, communication, and mutual respect.
LFS is dedicated to small class sizes and personalized attention, basing the level of instruction on each child’s interest and abilities. We are also passionate about forging connections between family, community, and environment, and supporting cultural awareness in our students. Children are encouraged to explore their own creativity and individuality through activities and projects in the areas of art, music, storytelling, discovery science, and physical and environmental education. The French language is learned gradually as children hear it spoken throughout the day.
Our Petite Section (ages should be ~3 or turn 3 by October 31 of the school year) and Moyenne Section classrooms emphasize discovery learning, pre-academic foundations and the development of social skills. The children are exposed to early literacy and math activities gradually. Arts and crafts, dramatic play, sensory activities, and storytelling are key. Petite Section operates from 8:30am-12:30pm daily 5 days/week, with the option to stay for nap or rest time, or stay later for extended care. Moyenne Section operates from 8:30am-2:30pm 5 days/ week (with the choice to nap or take a short rest), with the option to stay for extended care.
Our Grande Section program emphasizes discovery learning, social skills, and elementary preparation in a language-rich environment. The class is designed to support students seeking a smaller-group, alternative to public kindergarten. We offer a full-time program from 8:30am-2:30pm daily 5 days /week.
We also offer a limited number of 4 days/week (Monday – Thursday) placements for all three levels, designed to accommodate your needs.
Our After School extended care program promotes learning and socialization through indoor/outdoor play, projects, and child/teacher directed activities. The program is open to LFS students needing full time care, as well as elementary students looking for a French-supported after-school program. Our shuttle bus is available to help transport students from Charlemagne to LFS after school, and we are happy to provide homework support in French and English as needed. We offer the following pick up times: 12:30pm (Petite Section Only), 2:30pm, 3:30pm and 5:30pm.
We also have an extra-curricular weekly summer program, taking place in July and August each year. This program is typically run off-site (most recently at Lane Child and Family Center) so we can offer more outdoor exploration and summer fun in the sun. Information and sign-ups are typically available online in March or April!
